Overview
The Gas Works at Heworth Green has been vacant for over 20 years and has been designated in the Council’s draft Local Plan as a site for residential use. The delivery of new homes on this site is likely to be an important consideration for the council in order for it to meet its housing targets in the coming years.
The site is highly constrained due to historic contamination and by the need to retain functioning gas distribution infrastructure whilst any development takes place. These issues have been a contributing factor in a number of failed attempts over the years to bring the site forward for redevelopment.
There is now a committed developer willing to invest in and facilitate the comprehensive redevelopment of the site, with an agreement secured with NGN to deal with the gas distribution infrastructure.
The project presents a unique opportunity to create a new neighbourhood for future generations in a prominent location on the edge of the city centre, stitching together a fragmented urban environment in this part of the city.
What Has Been Achieved To Date
A masterplan has been developed for this seven-acre brownfield site on the edge of York City Centre.
It is a complex site with the need to replace the existing utility infrastructure before it can be fully developed. The aim of the owners, Heworth Green Developments Ltd, is to create a vibrant new community with much needed new homes, an urban park and landscaping throughout the site. We are pleased to have been working alongside the owners so and are sure that this will finally be delivered after various stalled attempts
Full Planning permission for the development was granted in early 2020.
Latest Update
Following completion of the initial infrastructure works on the site and discharge of planning conditions North Star are pleased to have been a part of first phase of this exciting scheme and have now handed over all operations to the owners Heworth Green Developments.
